The Licence Revenue Office (LRO) of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) is located at the Guyana Revenue Headquarters, 200-201 Camp Street, Georgetown, and at the corners of Princess and Smyth Streets, Georgetown. LRO is the only agency in Guyana that can register motor vehicles. In addition, agricultural vehicles can be registered at the Licensing and Certifying Offices in New Amsterdam, Corriverton, Linden, and Suddie.

Notwithstanding, there are procedures which govern the activities of the Licence Revenue Office. The details provided via the menu options (to the left) seek to address the different procedures necessary for the registration and licensing of motor vehicles and the applicable fees.

Part I (3) of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Regulations, made under Section 103 of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02, allows for nine (9) types of identification marks to be placed on motor vehicles registered in Guyana ( B,P,G,H,C,T, Diplomatic (DPL DC) and numerical numbers.

Accordingly, motor cars and other motor vehicles used for private purposes other than trade or business or hire and reward (commonly referred to as motor vehicles used for private purposes) should be registered as and must carry the identification mark ’P’ and those used for trade purposes (commonly referred to as goods carrying vehicles, such as motor lorries or vans should be registered as and must carry the identification mark ’G’.

The duties and taxes to be charged and levied with respect to each type of motor vehicle are set out in the Excise Tax Act No. 5 of 2006 and the Customs Tariff, which are administered by the Customs and Trade Administration (C&TA). All licensing and registration fees are provided for in the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02 and are levied and collected by the Licence Revenue Office (LRO) of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA).
